There’s nothing scary about raising a service dog puppy
Ahh, the sweet smell of puppy breath… Many of you know Stacy has been a puppy raiser for Guide Dogs of America for the past several years. She’s taking a break from raising puppies right now as her sweet Labrador Huckleberry, deserves a chance to relax in his senior years – however Guide dogs of America is always looking for puppy raisers. There is a group of raisers here in San Diego County. Guide dog and service dog puppies are placed with carefully screened foster families and individuals, known as “puppy raisers,” when they are 8 weeks old, learning proper house manners, basic obedience, and providing experiences that will give them confidence in the world during the first year of their life. The puppy is with you until approximately 16 -18 months of age. The #1 question she gets about puppy raising (beside “can I pet your dog?”) is how can you let them go? Her answer is two-fold. 1) it is so incredibly rewarding to know you are changing someone’s life and 2) you can always raise another puppy. If you’ve got questions about puppy raising, Stacy is your local canine resource.
